Dirty gutters can lead directly to foundation erosion, if they are not cleaned on a regular basis. Jim Hedgecock, owner of Ratliff Guttering, explained Ratliff's service and maintenance division not only cleans out gutters but also performs minor repairs when necessary.

Many people underestimate the need to clean their gutters in the spring and only clean them in the fall, Hedgecock said. Birds' nests and fallen tree buds contribute to a gutter's springtime blockage.

When installing gutters, the company works solely with seamless aluminum, because of its resistance to the weather, Hedgecock said. Aluminum gutters will not rust or rot, and customers receive a 20-year warranty on the paint's finish.

The company also works with only vinyl siding. "The most dramatic improvements in siding have occurred with vinyl in recent years," Hedgecock said. "There's been so much progress with the product in terms of its longevity, color fastness and increased design selection that we prefer it to both steel and aluminum siding."

Repairing vinyl siding is a quick process because the damaged panels can be popped out and replaced rather than having to remove and replace an entire section of steel siding, Hedgecock explained.
